Travel guide to Egypt: what you need to know as a tourist

All-inclusive means that food, drinks, snacks and in many cases activities are included in the price. No surprises at the end of the holiday, just total relaxation. Especially recommended for families and for those who don't want to have to spend all the time.

When to travel?

Egypt at any time is worth a visit, as the country enjoys sunshine almost every day of the year.

  • Peak season: October to April, when the weather is pleasantly warm, ideal for sightseeing and beach holidays.

  • Summer: May-September is hotter, but cheaper and less crowded.

Visa and entry requirements

Hungarian citizens require a tourist visa:

  • Visa on arrival: available on arrival at the airport for 25 USD

  • E-water: can be requested in advance online, at on the Egyptian official portal The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the end of your journey.

Documents required

  • Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months)

  • Tourist visa

  • Return flight ticket

  • Proof of accommodation booking

  • Consent from the other parent to travel with a child (if not travelling with them)

  • Travel insurance (recommended)

Travel restrictions and security

There are currently no COVID-related access restrictions.
Egypt is listed by the State Department as a country to be visited with "increased caution".

Areas to avoid:

  • Inner and northern Sinai Peninsula

  • Egypt-Libya and Egypt-Sudan border region

Currency and currency exchange

Official currency: Egyptian pound (EGP)
They do not change forints, so euros or US dollars worth taking.

    • The best exchange options: local money changers or ATMs

    • Don't change at the airport or hotel because the exchange rate is worse

    • Always carry a small denomination (useful for tipping)

Buy a local SIM card

  • Available at the airport (Vodafone, Orange, Etisalat, WE desks)

  • Need to add: valid passport

  • Prices: e.g. 30 GB data + 200 minutes approx. 10 USD

  • Cash payment is something to be prepared for

  • The best coverage is usually provided by Vodafone provides

  • Alternative: eSIM if your phone supports it
